10,000 Crore company’s vast array of eatables across the chocolate, baked goods, drinks and confectioneries categories – like the Parle-G biscuits, Frooti, Melody chocolates, Mango Bite candies, Monaco, Krack-Jack, Hide & Seek, Bourbon, Appy, Parle Poppins and the pocket-friendly Kismi, they hold a staggering 40 percent share in the biscuit market and a 15 percent share of the total confectionery market in India. It only diversified into biscuit production a decade later, in 1939. Built in 1929, the Parle factory first manufactured candies. Started by Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan way back in 1929 at Vile-Parle, a Mumbai suburb, Parle Products first launched an orange candy and then other confectionaries before entering the biscuits segment 10 years later. In 2012 company sold more than 100 crore packets across sizes every month, or 14,600 crore biscuits in the entire year, that is, 121 biscuits each for the 1.2 billion Indians. In reality though, the company derived its name from the location of its first manufacturing unit. So much so that, contrary to the truth, many believe the area is named after the biscuit maker. The Parle biscuit factory is unanimous with Mumbai’s Vile Parle. Today, the same value plank has helped the glucose biscuit brand become the first Indian FMCG brand to cross the Rs 5,000-crore mark in retail sales in a year. When Parle Products launched Parle-G in 1939 during the British rule, the firm considered it a responsibility to sell affordable biscuits to Indians.
